Why Impressionism?

What is it about impressionism that draws so many people to it?  What motivates artists who paint in the impressionist style?

Impressionism was my first love as a young artist.  I had no desire to look at or paint realistic subject matter, and although I enjoy colorful abstracts, they don’t usually motivate me to pick up my own art materials.  Stepping outside, however, almost always inspires me to paint.  One of the reasons I wanted to live in Fallbrook was because of the beautiful scenery, illuminated by the golden west coast light.

I can’t speak for others who like impressionism, but for me the appeal lies in that it captures a moment, complete with mood, light, and shadow.  I also enjoy that impressionist art makes the viewer’s eye work, allowing the person looking at the art to take part in the artistic process.
